Warning: Very very long post!(Situation: It was time of the year when the cricket season commences in the silicon valley of India. Players, most of them students commence their training after the long deserved gap. The season, as we will refer to it, commences from the summer & proceeds all the way up to Feb. Sometimes there is a chance that you end playing few tournaments in the month of March just before your exams.) Some call it a game, Few call it Life. He was among the “Few” of them. He was working very hard. His aim was to crack into his state Ranji team. He treated it like a come back. He had been stagnant in one level for a very long time; even then most of them regard that level as a good one. He wanted to break the shekels & show it to the world that indeed he's not yet done. He said to himself “There is no one in this world who can write me off”.
Then a significant thing happened, a moment of anguish rather a moment of such consequence that changed his path of illusion. A distinguishable personality spoke to him, which made him feel that he isn’t, may be a suitable guy for the game itself. May be he mustn't have listened to him at all or may be he should have. The course took its turn. He decided to drift his focus on to his academics in which he was no mug. He always wanted to be a computer engineer but his profession didn't give him enough time to anything else apart from spending the whole day in the field. His home was only used for sleeping by him. There was an offer from an US university which he wanted to take up, but that ended more miserably than his whole story itself.
In between he was appointed as the captain of his college cricket which happened to be the best in India. He wanted to make sure that he doesn't want to loose his college's pride just because the he was no more focused on scaling the height of the mountain. He just wanted to enjoy the pleasure of climbing more than climb it for achievement. He got on to the mountain again since it was a non refuse able climb which he had to take for the responsibility which was levied on him. Before the first submit there were again problems, questions, eyebrows raised over his personal capabilities. There was no question of capabilities here since it was a matter of pride more than conqueror. He came up with one man army knocks, personally stamping his authority in the sands of time. When he lifted the trophy after scoring an unbeaten eighty in the finals, sixty seven in the semis & a fifty in the quarters out of the three matches his team got to play in the thirty over a side tournament, he felt it. It got onto his heart. He screamed in the middle of the wicket after thumping the ball over the long on for a six "Yeeeaaaahhhh…..", there was a silence in the crowd. His fists were cutting the air like as thought some war has just been won. It was indeed a war! It marked the beginning of his long crusade.
The first challenge had been conquered but he didn't know it was just the beginning of a very long year. All through the year challenges were before him, he not only kept defending his territory but also expanded his. Vision grew over the time. It was the time of the year they set their foot on the sands of Rajasthan to play one of the best inter collegiate tournaments in India. It was time to “Bosm” the spirits of the damned hearts in the middle of the heat. He was now given the extra responsibility of managing the whole college. Success was smelt once, the blood was drawn once but it was the time to draw it on a larger scale. For him it was even more competitive because of his personal responsibilities. His imagination grew more, he wanted a clean sweep of all the possible events. His strategies very never welcomed sometimes, but yet there were successful when they were tried out. It was the smell of success when he was holding the winners trophy in his hands, he sensed it, the expectation, “The best sports college is made because of performance not potential” his starting words were when he was asked to speak. "Effort is immortal" he screamed when he finished his speech. His words still echoed in the crowd when he posed for the photographs, knowing his words would be the talk of the town the very next day. The second submit was conquered in style.
The upward scale in his life was just encouragement by the almighty for the things which are going to look rather very bad in the very next day after he arrived from the Thar Desert. He was not selected for his state team. This was the first year he was starring down the barrel after giving some of the astonishing acts. The reply given was no performance. He couldn't believe. He didn't know what else he had to do in order to find a place in a team of fifteen top cricketers in his state. The law of averages had proved its presence he thought. For him personally, this was more important than the rest put together. That's when the news came; he was made the captain of his university team. He couldn't imagine the line again.
He was determined to make a mark at the university level. He indeed did. Because of his performance in his first year he was the man of the finals. Now when he's at helm he makes sure every match is his. He tried as much as he could. But they ended up as the fourth spot of the tournament. He wasn't even selected for the All India team even after scoring a ninety in the quarter's, fifty in the semis & three wickets for twenty in the play offs match. He couldn't imagine his fate. It was going miserable day by day.
Meanwhile he was stamping his authority in each & every tournament his college team was taking part. He would come up with a match winning performance because of his batting or bowling or keeping or fielding or purely captainship. His thoughts were simple & straight, “Either be the best or be different”. He wanted to be the latter. He said to himself "U are the destiny, u make it & u break it". Indeed it was time to write the most remember able chapter, which he didn't know was because of the destiny or not. "U govern your own life son" his trainer had told him. That trip to an open tournament which was won by his college team was the first ever win by a college team in the history of his state cricket. He won the man of the series award after beating the best cricket team in his state in front of the very own eyes of the selector who said he didn't have any performance. His performance in that trophy was compared as a real all round one. He batted, bowled, kept, fielded, scored runs when required, batted every where, captained the whole team, showed them the path, what not?!. He was a satisfied man at the end of the tourney. He jumped across to the highway and screamed in the midnight looking at the moon
"I AM THE OTHER SIDE OF YOU"...................
The reception at the college was no different. It was indeed the most wonderful one anybody can think about. For his guiding light he was adjusted the sportsman of the year of the best sports college in his country. He didn’t want any words of appreciations or awards or recognitions. It was a moment of satisfaction when he spent his last few days at the sports department with pride that he had indeed not alone done his job but also set standards for his junior’s to follow. What happened after those days is another story. But that one year in his life has changed his very outlook towards life.
